Reading

Tier One:
Learn To Read The World

“Every great reader starts as a curious detective.” -Sovey

Reading isn’t just about books—it’s about noticing meaning everywhere.
A smile, an emoji, a raised eyebrow—they all speak! In Tier One, you’ll learn to “read” with your eyes, ears, and instincts- unlocking the fluency to understand English in motion, not just in print.
What clues do you think Sovey is looking for?

You’ve Been Reading All Along! No dictionary needed to understand this picture.
Look at Sovey’s smile 😄. Her hands in the air. The emoji.
Without a single word, you know exactly how she feels: EXCITED!

Excited Sovey

That’s multimodal reading. You’re already doing it—every time you text a friend, react to a meme, or watch someone’s face. In Tier One, you’ll practice using that superpower on purpose—so you can understand more, faster, and with way more fun.

🧠 Quick Test:
Look at the emojis on your phone right now.
Which ones show feelings?
Which ones show ideas?
(Hint: 💭 🧠 🚀 💡 📣)

What’s Communicating Here?

  • 💡 Lightbulb Emoji = “I just had an idea!”
  • ☝️ Raised Finger = “Wait! I’ve got something to say!”
  • 😄 Smile + Eye Contact =
“I believe in what I’m saying.”

Beyond Words

Multimodal reading goes further than just feelings.
It also helps you understand ideas—even when they’re unspoken.

In this image, Sovey’s raised finger and the lightbulb emoji 💡 say, “I’ve got it!” without a single word. These are symbols—and they’re everywhere in English. A ❤️  can show connection. A✨ can mean excitement. Even punctuation (!) and ALL CAPS have meaning.

In Tier One, you’ll practice reading these symbols on purpose, so you can confidently decode messages in chats, memes, captions, and conversations—even when the grammar isn’t perfect.

👀 Mini Challenge:
Next time you scroll social media, try “reading” someone’s post without looking at the words. What do their face, hands, or emoji say?

Is Reading Important?

Absolutely. But it doesn’t have to be thousands of pages! That’s why Inkwell ESL firmly believes that if you “read” the world around you, learning can be done much faster!

Picture The Message

Reading images, symbols, and layout helps you understand more than just words. What does a heart emoji mean in the U.S.? What about in the Philippines? In Tier One, you’ll practice noticing cultural clues and visual “grammar” so you can read confidently across borders.

Think In English!

Fluency doesn’t mean knowing every word. It means thinking in patterns—so when you read a sentence, a face, or a message, you can guess, react, and respond. In Tier One, you’ll practice trusting yourself to understand English without translating every word.
